Email

Frameleaf can send email when:

  • you create an account for someone (a welcome email)
  • someone is added to a shared album
  • new photos or videos are added to a shared album

It sends through a mail server you choose, over SMTP. Nothing is sent until you set one up.

  1. Select Settings in the sidebar, then open Notifications, then Email delivery.
  2. Turn on Enable email notifications.
  3. Fill in the settings below.
  4. Select Send test email and save. A successful test also saves your email settings; any other changes you’ve made stay in your draft.
Setting What it does Default
Host Your mail server, for example smtp.gmail.com
Port Mail server port 587
Username Your mail account’s user name
SMTP password Select Replace credential to enter it. It’s stored write-only and shows only Stored or Not set
SMTPS Use SMTP over TLS from the start. Usually on for port 465 and off for port 587 Off
Ignore certificate errors Accept the mail server’s certificate even if it can’t be verified. Only for testing Off
From address Sender name and address, for example Frameleaf Photo Server <[email protected]>. Use an address you’re allowed to send from
Reply-to address Where replies go. Leave empty to use the From address

Gmail needs an app password, which needs 2-Step Verification on your Google account.

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google account, then create an app password in your Google account’s security settings. Save the password it shows.
  2. In Frameleaf, open Settings, then Notifications, then Email delivery, and turn on Enable email notifications.
  3. Enter:
    • Host: smtp.gmail.com
    • Port: 587
    • Username: your full Gmail address
    • SMTP password: select Replace credential and enter the app password
    • SMTPS: off
    • Ignore certificate errors: off
    • From address: for example Frameleaf <[email protected]>
  4. Select Send test email and save.
  1. Create an app password for your Microsoft account in its security settings.
  2. In Frameleaf, open Settings, then Notifications, then Email delivery, and turn on Enable email notifications.
  3. Enter:
    • Host: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 587
    • Username: your email address
    • SMTP password: select Replace credential and enter the app password
    • SMTPS: off
    • From address: for example Frameleaf <[email protected]>
  4. Select Send test email and save.

Emails link back to your server, to the album or to the sign-in page for a new account, using your Public server URL. Set it in Settings, then Frameleaf Cloud, then Remote access, then Public server URL. It doesn’t need a Frameleaf Cloud link.

Without a public server URL, emails are sent without links and ask the recipient to open Frameleaf on your server instead. A {baseUrl} tag in a custom template is left empty too, so links built from it won’t work.

To change the wording of the emails, open Notifications, then Email Templates. Templates are HTML, and you can use tags that are filled in for each email. An empty template uses the default email. Each template has a Preview button.

Template Tags you can use
Welcome email template {username}, {password}, {displayName}, {baseUrl}
Invite Album Template {senderName}, {recipientName}, {albumId}, {albumName}, {baseUrl}
Update Album Template {recipientName}, {albumId}, {albumName}, {baseUrl}

Each person chooses which emails they get in their own Settings, under Notifications:

  • Enable: all email notifications on or off
  • Album added: when they’re added to a shared album
  • Album updated: when a shared album has new photos or videos

See Notifications for how this looks to them.

When you create an account, turn on Send a welcome email. The option only appears once email delivery is set up.
