Memories

Memories bring back moments from your library: this day in past years, trips, birthdays, yearly highlights and stories about the people and pets you’ve named. They play as a story, full screen. Nothing is ever shared or published automatically.

Memory What it is
On this day Photos from the same date in earlier years, such as “One year ago”
Trips A run of photos across at least two days, titled with the place where most of them were taken
Yearly highlights “2025 in review”: highlights spread across the months of a year
Birthdays “Sam’s birthday”, with the age they turn, for people and pets whose date of birth you’ve set
Recaps “2025 with Sam”: a year with one person or pet
Pet stories “Moments with Rex”: a month with one of your named pets

Birthdays need a date of birth in People. Pet stories need a named pet with at least five confirmed photos in that month.

A trip is a run of photos where no gap is longer than 20 hours, or 6 hours when the place changes, so a same-day flight starts a new trip. It needs at least two different days and at least eight photos. Days are counted in the local time where the photos were taken, so a trip across time zones still reads as the days you lived through.

Photos taken within 20 seconds of each other, such as bursts and Live Photo pairs, count as one moment. Long trips and yearly highlights pick photos evenly across days or months, so one busy day doesn’t drown out the rest. A trip keeps up to 60 photos, and a pet story up to 40.

Open Memories from the sidebar. The page is split into:

  • Today
  • Upcoming: the next 14 days, when Show upcoming is on
  • Earlier: trips and highlights

Each memory card has a menu with Play, Favourite, Show less and Hide memory. Hover over a card to see a slow preview.

The gear on the Memories page opens Memory settings:

  • Show upcoming previews memories for the next two weeks.
  • Only favorites shows only the memories you’ve marked with a heart.
  • Showing less of lists everything you’ve asked to see less of, so you can bring it back.

A memory opens with a title card, then plays each photo with gentle movement, with the place and date along the bottom. If your device asks for reduced motion, photos fade instead. Progress segments at the top show where you are; click one to jump there. Use the arrow keys to move between photos.

In the player you can:

  • Show all items in the memory and jump to any of them
  • Rename memory; leave the title empty to go back to the generated one
  • Reorder the photos, moving each one earlier or later
  • Remove from memory a photo that doesn’t belong; it stays in your library
  • favourite a single photo, or the whole memory
  • turn on the soundtrack, which uses the sound from the memory’s own videos. It’s off by default, and there’s no music library.
  • Make a movie in Studio to keep editing it as a video project

At the end, choose Play again or Next memory.

Each photo stays on screen for five seconds by default. Change it with Memory display duration (seconds) in Settings, then Your preferences.

Show less lets you see fewer memories of a person, a pet, a day, or a kind of memory, such as fewer trips or fewer birthdays. Matching memories are removed and Frameleaf stops making new ones. Bring any of them back from Memory settings.

Hide memory removes one memory. Its photos stay in your library, and hidden memories can be restored from Hidden memories at the bottom of the page.

You can turn a memory into a short highlight video. Choose Highlight video, then:

Option Choices
Length About 30 seconds, about 1 minute or about 2 minutes
Sound Each video’s own sound, or no sound

Choose Render. The video is made on your server, or on another computer on your home network, and you can leave the page while it works. It stays private to you until you download it or save it to your library, and it’s removed along with the memory.

The iPhone and Android apps can make one too, and save it to your library or to the phone.

A memory that contains even one Locked item is hidden entirely while your session is locked. Sharing a memory is always something you choose to do.

Memories are on by default. In Settings, then Your preferences, you can turn off Show memories, or keep them on but turn off Show Memories in the sidebar.

New memories are made by the Generate memories nightly task, which is on by default in Administration, then Settings, then Nightly Tasks Settings. You can also run Generate memories or Clean up old memories by hand from Administration, then Jobs.
