Supported formats

Frameleaf accepts the photo and video formats below, from phones, cameras and other apps. Your originals are always stored exactly as uploaded. For display, Frameleaf makes thumbnails and previews, and transcodes videos into a copy that plays smoothly in browsers and on phones.

Some RAW files, older Canon .cr2 files for example, have a missing or unusable embedded preview. With Enhanced RAW rendering on, Frameleaf uses the embedded preview first and falls back to a full render with LibRaw when it needs to, so these files still get proper thumbnails and previews. It’s on by default, in Administration, then Settings, then Image.

A RAW file that can’t be rendered is reported as unsupported, separately from files that are actually damaged. See Library Care.

When you review duplicates, Frameleaf suggests keeping a RAW original over a JPEG copy, and HEIC or HEIF over JPEG, even when the JPEG is bigger.

Apple Live Photos (a still photo and a short .mov) and Android Motion Photos are kept together as one item that plays its motion. If the two halves of a Live Photo were uploaded separately, rejoin them with Utilities, then Relink live photos. See Library Care.

Frameleaf reads and writes .xmp sidecar files next to your originals. Changes you make to dates, locations, descriptions, ratings and tags are saved there, and existing sidecars from other apps are read when a file is imported.

A file with an extension that isn’t listed is rejected on upload and skipped in external libraries. Convert it to a supported format first, or ask in GitHub Discussions if you think it should be supported.
